Before After

Before Bunion/Hammertoe Radiograph

This X-ray shows a mild bunion deformity.  This patient also has hammertoes, or contracted digits.

After Bunion/Hammertoe Radiograph

This patient underwent a "Long-Arm" Austin bunionectomy with internal screw fixation as well as correction of her hammertoe deformity on her 2nd digit.  The implant in the 2nd toe is called a "Hammerlock."  Several types of screws/implants can be used for these procedures.

Before Bunion Radiograph

This patient has a mild bunion deformity.

After Bunion Radiograph

This X-ray shoes the corrected bunion deformity.  The procedure performed here was an Austin bunionectomy with internal screw fixation.

Before Bunion Clinical Picture and Radiograph

The picture on the left is a clinical picture of a patient with a mild bunion deformity on both feet.  She underwent surgical correction on the left foot.

The picture on the right is her preoperative radiograph better showing her bunion deformity.

After Bunion Clinical Picture and Radiograph

The clinical picture on the left is one month after surgery.  There is still some swelling and bruising, but you can appreciate the realignment of the first big toe joint already!

The picture on the right is the postoperative radiograph showing realignment and internal screw fixation.

Before After

Before Bunion Radiograph

This radiograph shows a more moderate bunion deformity.  There is a more pronounced shift of the metatarsal and further leaning of the big toe towards the lesser toes.

After Bunion Radiograph

The procedure shown here is known as an "Opening Base Wedge" Procedure.  Base procedures, (referring to the base of the 1st metatarsal as opposed to the head), are used with more moderate or severe bunions.  Above, a plate and screws are used to hold the fixed deformity in place.

Before After

Before Bunion/Tailor's Bunion/Hammertoe Radiograph

This radiograph shows a patient with a slight bunion and arthritis of her big toe joint.  She also has a Tailor's Bunion and a painful Hammertoe of her 4th toe.

After Bunion/Tailor's Bunion/Hammertoe Radiograph

This radiograph shows correction of the bunion at the big toe joint.  The procedure performed is called a "Youngswick" bunionectomy.  This procedure allows for correction of the bunion AND slight shortening of the 1st metatarsal to give the joint more room to move smoothly.

The above radiograph also shows removal of the hammertoe at the 4th toe.

It also shows resection of the outside portion of the 5th metatarsal, known as a Tailor's Bunionectomy.

Before After

Before Bunion Clinical Picture and Radiograph

The picture on the left is a clinical picture of a patient with a moderate bunion deformity on her right foot.  She underwent surgical correction to correct the deformity.

The picture on the right is her preoperative radiograph better showing her bunion deformity.

After Bunion Clinical Picture and Radiograph

The clinical picture on the left is 12 weeks after surgery.  The surgical scar will continue to remodel for up to a year after surgery, becoming thinner and lest noticeable.

The picture on the right is the postoperative radiograph showing realignment and internal screw fixation.  This patient had a "Long Arm Austin" Bunionectomy.  This longer arm allows for correction of more severe bunions.  The procedure usually requires two screws to fixate, as seen above.

Before After

Before Bunion/Hammertoe Radiograph

This X-ray shows a mild bunion deformity.  This patient also has hammertoes, or contracted digits.  The Hammertoes at her 2nd and 3rd toes were painful and were corrected at the same time as her bunion procedure.

After Bunion/Hammertoe Radiograph

This patient underwent an Austin bunionectomy with internal screw fixation as well as correction of the hammertoe deformities on her 2nd and 3rd digits. She also had an Akin procedure.  Some patients with a long big toe require a bone cut here as well for full correction of the bunion deformity.
